John 17: 11
And now I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, while I am coming to you.
If you google "handless statue of Jesus", you'll find a couple different stories . One is of a church in Germany and another is in San Diego. The European statue was damaged after a bombing during WWII. In San Diego the story goes that there was vandalism. In both the person in charge turned down to offer to have the hands recreated, instead stating the words of St Teresa of Avila, "Christ has no body now on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours."
In today's gospel reading that's exactly what Jesus says. I'm not going to be here, but the people you gave to me, whom I taught and love are. They can carry this work on. And through our Baptism, we have also been commissioned, taught and we have that unconditional love. So really, you are the decision maker. Are you going to recreate the hands of Christ? You don't need clay or stone. Just eyes that are willing to see and a heart that is open to serve.
